History Made at Women's Henley Regatta

11th July 2024

History was made recently as Sixth Form pupil, Martha Morrow became the first pupil from Winchester College to enter the Women’s Henley Regatta.

Following an impressive performance at the National Schools' Regatta earlier in the year, Martha travelled to Henley-on-Thames in late June to take part in the competition.

This year saw the largest ever number of entries, with over 2,300 athletes entering the competition from all over the world, including crews from the USA, Holland, and Scotland.

Competing for the Di Ellis Trophy for Junior 1x, Martha progressed through a time trial to get to the main event, before eventually being eliminated in the later stages.

The College’s Head of Rowing, Nathan Williams said, “This is a massive achievement for Martha, as she only started rowing in October, did not focus on single sculling until the end of March, and was racing against scullers who have been competing at the highest level for some time. It usually takes years of practice and work to be competitive at this level, and Martha has managed it in a few months.”
