Winchester College appoints first ever Sixth Form Girls' Housemistress

25th February 2025

The College is delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Katherine Cole as the Housemistress of the first Sixth Form Girls' Boarding House, due to open in September 2026.

“I look forward to welcoming Sixth Form girl boarders to a school with over 600 years of history and a deeply embedded culture of manners, kindness, and acceptance.”

Katherine joins Winchester from Sherborne Girls in Dorset, where she spent four years as Housemistress of the school’s Upper Sixth house. She studied German and Linguistics at Jesus College, Oxford, and spent a year at the Universität Trier in Germany focusing on German Literature. She qualified as a teacher while working at Hurstpierpoint College, where she also served as Assistant Housemistress.

Her career has included roles as Head of German at both Ardingly College and St. Edward’s School in Oxford, where she was also Assistant Housemistress in the Upper Sixth house and a mixed age house respectively at both schools. Before moving to Sherborne Girls Katherine also taught at Headington School.

Beyond the classroom, Katherine has managed netball and badminton teams, accompanied numerous Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, and led overseas trips and exchanges. She is a particular fan of German Christmas markets and enjoys participating in choirs whenever possible, as well as playing the flute and baritone saxophone. An avid concertgoer and traveler, she moves to Winchester with her two children and her husband, Ben, a Classics teacher.

Commenting on her appointment, Katherine said: "I'm thrilled to be part of this exciting phase in the College’s long history. I look forward to welcoming Sixth Form girl boarders to a school with over 600 years of history and a deeply embedded culture of manners, kindness, and acceptance."
