Parents may have heard of the tragic passing of Harry Armstrong Evans (H, 2013 – 2018) and the inquest into his death last year. Harry is fondly remembered by his House, Trant's, as a kind and gentle pupil, skilful at chess and passionate about rowing.
John Cullerne, Surmaster (Academic) has a lasting memory of Harry's contribution on one Winchester Match Day, which sums him up: "Harry spent the morning up at the boathouse making his usual stalwart contribution to the operations and activities there, and then in the afternoon on Lavender Meads, where he was in charge of the Chess tables. At one point in the afternoon, the tables became very popular and heaved with players, and Harry, respectfully, gave his time to play some very old OWs. He made some OWs very happy indeed, and we know, because they told us, that they were hugely grateful for his time and attention."
Harry’s parents are campaigning for transparency measures under which universities would publish their annual suicide rates, with the Department for Education given powers to investigate institutions where the rate is above average, as well as introducing mandatory mental health awareness training for academic tutors. We are very happy to draw the sympathetic attention of all friends of the school to this petition: Harry’s parents hope that it will bring much momentum to a most worthy cause.
