Many congratulations to William Newport (MP, Freddie's), who has made it to the finals of the BBC Young Chorister of the Year. He is one of just three boys from across the country in the final, which will be aired on Sunday 11 December at 13:15 on BBC Two. Supported by his parents and Winchester singing teacher, Claire Rutter, Will progressed through the semi-finals, which were broadcast last Sunday, with a beautiful performance of 'Pie Jesu' by Fauré. In the short interview below, Will talks about the experience.
Makyth Ventures
Makyth Ventures, Winchester College’s entrepreneurship and innovation hub, held the final of its Ignite competition on 26 November with 150 people from schools including Rugby, Francis Holland School, King Edward VI, Monkton Combe, Harrow, St Swithun's, and Barton Peveril. The teams had been working on case studies to end waste in schools and pitched their ideas at the event, with the winners securing funding towards a future CATALYST programme.
Learning
Winchester chemists, Oliver J., Matteo L., Shaolin L. and Sam S., have won the South-West Regional Heat of the RSC’s Top of the Bench Practical Chemistry competition for pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11, outperforming 14 other schools in the process.
To win they had to solve a number of practical problems from polymer and surfactant Chemistry. In particular, they were tasked with investigating the peculiar phenomenon of the “soap-powered boat”. Their poster presentation on the structure and mode of action of soap as a cleaning agent won considerable praise from the judges.
The team will now progress to the National Final on 25 March 2023 at the University of East London.
Careers
Proper preparation for the MMI, used by the majority of UK medical schools, is critical to pupils hoping to study medicine at university. Last week, Winchester ran its annual practice interview sessions, which are crafted to emulate the real experience. Pupils from local schools and our partners across Hampshire also took part.
History was made on Saturday when the first ever girls’ soccer team represented Winchester College away against Charterhouse. The team’s lack of experience was more than made up for in enthusiasm and commitment. Francesca W. (VI Book 2, Trant's) scored in the 5-1 defeat against a much more established team.
The boys' Soccer XI defeated Charterhouse for the first time since 2013, with a score of 2-1.
Winchester pupils won three golds at the Warwick 100s competition, swimming against ten other schools. Selin M. (VI Book 2, Toye's) won the U18 50m fly (32.96) and silver in U18 50m freestyle (30.91). She is the first female swimmer to represent Winchester in the pool. Jake H. (VI Book 1, Toye's) won U18 50m breaststroke (30.55) and the U18 100m individual medley (1.02.37). With the breaststroke he came in 5 seconds ahead of second place, swimming one of his fastest ever times.
On Sunday our U18A Fives team successfully defended their title at the Schools' Winchester Fives Doubles Championship, having won it five years out of the previous seven. Playing at home, Shiloh W. and Chris L. (both VI Book 1, Freddie's) won the trophy, with second place for Henry A. (VI Book 1, Freddie's) and JohnPaul C. (VI Book 2, Freddie's), and third for Jeffrey C. (V Book, Cook's) and Anthony C. B. (V Book, Toye's).
