Head Librarian
Moberly Library is a vibrant, engaging and dynamic space that supports our pupils’ education and interests. Our ever-evolving collections (both books and digital resources) directly support the curriculum and also provide supplemental reading material for those who wish to dive deeper into their subject areas. We have a superb fiction section, which I will continue to develop with a particular focus on books for young adults. This term will see big changes in the fiction section as we reorganise the books into genres such as Graphic Novels, Fantasy, Action/Adventure, etc.
It is crucial for school libraries to be nimble, adaptable spaces to meet the ever-evolving needs of both the curriculum and pupil body. I look forward to ensuring that Moberly Library remains a world-class facility that our pupils actively seek out when they need a place to study or to simply relax with a good book.
Sustainability
One of the manifesto promises of Sixth Form pupil Dev Sharma (VI Book 1, Chawker's) when he stood for the UK Youth Parliament earlier this year, was to host a climate conference in Hampshire. Dev, now elected as Youth MP for Winchester, made his promise a reality with an Eco Conference hosted at the College by Hampshire Youth Parliament in association with the Final Straw Foundation yesterday, Monday 17 October.
250 state school pupils and staff joined Winchester pupils for a programme of inspiring speeches and workshops on a range of topics related to climate change and sustainability.
Drama
For their house play, Sergeant's (Phil’s) decided to tackle Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus. The play is a retelling (far from historically accurate) of Mozart’s life, from the point of view of his archnemesis, Antonio Salieri.
In just a few weeks, the Philites managed to put together an impeccable performance with the support of their director, Mr Kevin Fondain. More than a third of the house were involved, either on stage or working with the technical team on lights, music or backstage. The tension between the two main characters was palpable, played by Seb (VI Book 1) as the embittered Salieri and Michael (VI Book 2) as the likeable and inappropriate Mozart.
Entrepreneurship
Launched last September, Makyth Ventures (MV) is Winchester College’s entrepreneurship and innovation hub, aimed at fostering entrepreneurial skills and mindsets amongst secondary school students to prepare them to thrive in a world of rapid change.
The MV team is excited to launch its Ignite programme this November, an interscholastic entrepreneurial case competition that will see students work with – and compete against - peers from other leading secondary schools across the UK.
Ignite will focus on developing practical, applicable, problem-solving skills as pupils tackle a real-world entrepreneurial challenge with support from practitioners across the startup sector. Winning teams will access ongoing opportunities for development, with the ambition of bringing case solutions to life following the programme.
Find out more about Ignite here, which is open to all pupils. Parents of pupils who sign up are welcome to attend the finale event on 26 November.

CCF
This year’s Competition saw a very high standard across all of the 16 schools competing. Our pupils, representing the College's Royal Marines section, performed professionally and maintained a high standard throughout the weekend.
The competition is based on military skill, such as sectional attack, contact drills with obstacle courses and difficult navigation around Woodbury Common, using ten-figure grid references.
Sport
This year's Jun Jun - the first year's cross-country race - takes place on Thursday 20 October. The runners will set off from Meads at midday and start to return from 12:30. Parents are welcome to cheer them over the finishing line.
Other years will participate in cross-country races after Leave-out. Jun, for JP, MP and V Book, takes place on Tuesday 1 November at 14:15, and Sen, for VI Book, takes place on 15 November at 14:15.
Charity
Aarav Sharma (MP, Hopper's) and his sister Amaya, have together founded a charity to send tennis equipment to children around the world who would not otherwise have an opportunity to play the game.
Tennis4TheWorld collects unwanted tennis equipment and clothing and distributes it to schools, colleges and social development projects. The charity aims to help disadvantaged children to enjoy the sport, develop skills and the values it engenders. In future, the charity aims to send tennis coaches and students to teach these communities how to play.
For the second year running, David Lloyd, Acton’s Tennis Awards Dinner on 26 November will benefit the charity. Aarav and Amaya are seeking help from the Winchester community in three ways:
Donations of raffle prizes for the dinner with a tennis/sport focus, such as activities vouchers, tickets to sporting fixtures or signed memorabilia.
Donations of new and used for tennis equipment including sportswear, trainers and tennis racquets.
Any financial support to help with shipping costs.

Careers
On Saturday 15 October the Futures Department and Win Coll Soc jointly hosted a Futures Fair for our Sixth Form pupils. 35 Parents and Old Wykehamists gathered in New Hall to represent 15 industry sectors from Arts & Culture to Medicine & Health with much variety between. The 180 pupils who attended engaged in 90 minutes of focused and useful conversations, each visiting up to five different stands.
We are extremely grateful to all the parents and OWs who kindly gave up their Saturday evening to contribute.
