Whole School
Over 3,000 parents, pupils, friends and staff joined Wykeham Day on Saturday 18 June.
OTH romped home to victory in the Field Gun Run with an astounding time of 2'08". Both crews put on an impressive display, but CPO Marcus Ashworth (VI Book 1, Furley's) and his fifteen men carried off the laurels. The win capped fine CCF careers for WO2 Nader Moghadam (VI Book 1, Cook's) and WO2 George Smedley (VI Book 1, Furley's) and marked a great start for most promising recruit Cdt Max Ingram (MP, Chawker's), all of whom were recognised in the Corps' awards and commendations for 2021-22.
Lords XI and 2nd XI both triumphed over the OW XI on Saturday. For more details see the Sports Report.
The following short film captures some highlights from the day, accompanied by David Price conducting the Winchester College Wind Orchestra, performing Wolfenden’s Gallimaufry at the Wykeham Eve concert.
Charities
Congratulations to the pupils and staff who have raised over £11,200 for the EmbraceMe Foundation. The cyclists started at 7am and, having reached their original destination of Lviv by midday, they decided to push on to Mariupol, travelling 2840km in total.
The funds raised so far will buy a frontline-equipped ambulance to provide aid to the civilians affected by the attacks on cities in Ukraine. Fundraising continues as an additional £2,000 would mean the team could purchase a second, support (non-frontline) ambulance. The ambulances would be shipped out at the end of this week.
Thank you to everyone who is showing their support through generous donations.
The team had a great day on the water on Thursday, wining all four of their races in an inter-school fixture against Bryanston School and Sherborne School. Pictured are our Winchester Fireflies in positions 1, 2 and 3.
There were some effective downwind manoeuvres from Ed Beveridge (VI Book 1, Cook's), pushing a Sherborne boat out of the way and us into a winning position, as well as some strong sailing from some newer and younger members of the team.
This match provided useful practice for the forthcoming BDSRA Team Racing Finals at Chew Valley Sailing Club in two weeks' time.
Thank you to everyone who supported Wykeham Week. Over 470 people raised £265,000. There is still time to donate if you would like your name in the new Sports Centre.
Congratulations to Kenny's who won the House Competition and enjoyed a pizza night on Friday.
