Short Film Competition
On Friday evening, we celebrated the final of our short film competition, Sixty Second Cinema. Originally a Junior Part event, this year all pupils were invited to participate, and dons were delighted with the quality, creativity and breadth of the works submitted.
Pupils made one minute films, using one of ten titles as a starting point. Ten films were screened at the final and the film producer Fergus Haycock (OW – F), adjudicated with generous critique for all submissions.
The following prizes were awarded:
Best Film: Alfred Merton (VI Book 1, Phil's)
Best Cinematography: Edwin Fletcher (MP, Freddie's)
Best Editing: Anton Oliver (JP, Trant's)
Expeditions for the Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) Awards took place over Leave-out. The Silver Award group explored the Tissington area of the Peak District, with boys enjoying excellent walking conditions in Dove Dale. The Gold group undertook their expedition in the Lake District, taking on a challenging route from Wasdale Head to Keswick, via the summits of Helvellyn and Blencathra and famous ridges such as Swirral Edge and Hall’s Fell Ridge.
Pupils interested in taking part in DofE next year will have the opportunity to sign up before the end of term.
Last weekend the VIth Book 2 Geographers undertook residential fieldwork in Herefordshire and the Brecon Beacons, studying the landscape's glacial features, conducting deprivation-focused fieldwork in Hereford, and visiting case study locations in the Brecon Beacons.
Evenings at the field centre in Hay-on-Wye allowed for some high-quality cricket with the presence of five Lords players.
The village of Bramley in North Hampshire was the venue for the latest CCF exercise. Boys had to search for a helicopter crash site, with the mission to evacuate casualties and destroy secret on-board electronics.
At our fixtures against Teddies Oxford on Saturday we won six out of nine matches. The 1st XI continue to have an excellent season with another victory in the John Harvey Cup, and, having defeated Marlborough in the Regional Final of the Cricket Paper National Boys U17 Cup, face Teddies again in the National Quarter Final of the competition. The match will be played on Lords this Friday at 12:30 and parents are welcome to come and support.
We had five boys compete at the Hampshire Schools County Athletics championships in Portsmouth on Saturday, and four of them came away as County Champions. Hamish Rogers (VI Book 1, Kenny's) and Gus Bowden (V Book, Chawker's) (pictured) took the high jump titles in their respective categories, Rory McGregor (JP, Trant's) won the junior Long Lump and Harry Draper-Barr (VI Book 2, Hopper's) claimed the senior discus title.
The Boat Club attended Marlow Town Regatta over the weekend, where the J14s bagged wins in the Octo and coxed quad (both pictured).
Sixth Form
A raft of inflatables returned to Lavender Meads on Sunday for an afternoon of fun and friendly competition for pupils in VI Book and V Book. 72 boys organised themselves into six teams and were eager to tackle the assault course, bungee stretch, bungee dash, gladiatorial jousting, penalty kick-off and hoop shooting.
Team Two - all from Furley’s - triumphed after a nail-biting tie-break against Cook’s. Congratulations to Karl Dumasia, Axel Blakey, James Fairley, Marcus Ashworth, Xavier Millard, Jonny Cragg, David Monahan, Archie Sillars, Paul Edwards, Rocco Thompson-Baroni and Freddie Van Every. Not the usual penalty shootout but a team relay through the assault course wearing chicken costumes!
James Hunter (VI Book 2, Beloe's) was highly commended by judges from Oriel College, Oxford, for his entry to the Rex Nettleford Essay Prize. The competition, named after Oriel alumnus and Jamaican academic Rex Nettleford, encourages Year 12 students to engage with the legacies of colonialism and the difficult questions posed by them.
Responding to the question: ‘Language is an essential tool of colonial domination - Discuss,’ James explored the policies of linguistic and cultural domination implemented by the Japanese authorities in colonial Korea between 1910 and 1945.
James travelled to Oriel College to receive his prize from the Provost, and his essay will be published in the upcoming Winchester History Journal.

There will be an exclusive screening of a new short film, 'Circle' by Jeshaiah Murray (VI Book 2, Cook's). Held captive and faced with their imminent executions, a group of strangers are forced to choose the one person among them who deserves to live. This is Jeshaiah's adaptation of the original film: ‘Circle’ (2015). Watch the trailer.
'Circle' will be shown in the QEII Theatre at 11:30 and 14:30, and lasts 30 minutes. Book tickets.

On Tuesday 24 May, the Warden held a dinner in the Lodgings to mark the award of an MBE, given to Tommy Cookson for services to education.
During his career, Tommy Cookson was the headmaster of three major schools. In retirement he has not let the grass grow under his feet. Helping to found Physics Partners, and giving his experience and expertise, has been crucial to the success of the initiative.
Physics Partners is an educational charity providing hands-on training and support for non-specialist and newly qualified physics teachers in state secondary schools.
Charities
Sixth Form pupil Thomas Sharrock (VI Book 1, College) has presented Tash Haji from Naomi House & Jacksplace with a cheque for £1,690.47, which is the sum raised by pupils from Winchester College, St Swithun's School and Peter Symonds College at last month's 'Resilience' fashion show.
