Art
Former Art Master, Grahame Drew (1958 - 1980), always encouraged pupils to travel in order to extend their appreciation and enjoyment of art and culture. To celebrate his legacy, a number of his former pupils founded the Drew Travel Scholarship fund.
This year, applications were invited from members of VI Book 2 to undertake travel within the United Kingdom. Alex Ling (Kenny's), Charlie Sokol (Freddie's) and James Lewis (Chawker's) were awarded scholarships for trips to London and St Ives, Cornwall.
Alex, Charlie and James have produced a series of engaging responses to their travel in paint, print and sculpture, which are currently on display in Art School. The exhibition will be open to visitors on Thursday between 1400 and 1800, and by arrangement outside of these hours.
Sport
This year’s inter-house athletics competition took place in warm and calm conditions at the University of Winchester's track facility.
There were a number of fine performances throughout the afternoon and the individual Victor Ludorum titles, given to the highest-scoring athletes, went to Timothy Kashirin (VI Book 1, Freddie's) in the Senior competition and Jeffrey Chan (MP, Cook's) in the Junior event. Timothy claimed double victories in the 100m and 200m, and Jeffrey claimed double victories in the long jump and triple jump.
The team titles were very closely-fought. The new Medley relay format saw victories for Toye’s in the ‘A’ string race and Furley’s in the ‘B’ string race. Although Furley’s claimed the Senior trophy, and Cook’s the Junior trophy, the two second places in these competitions saw Toye’s take the overall trophy.
Spanish
Sasha Del Mar (VI Book 2, Freddie's) took first place in the South East region of the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators. The competition, run by Queen’s College, Oxford, was judged by a team of university students and professional translators, who selected Sasha's text from 3,200 entries, from more than 260 schools.
Sasha had to translate an extract from an English article into Spanish, concerning accusations that a singer had appropriated Flamenco music and culture to produce her musical style. The challenge was to communicate the idea of culturally-specific festivals, which have no verbatim translation and express the meaning for those with no cultural background.
Sasha will now go forward to the National Final of the competition.
Rowing
The Boat Club was out in force on Saturday, with wins for the J14 and J16 quads at Worcester Spring Regatta, and the J15 coxed four at St Edward's, Oxford. All good preparation for the National Schools' Regatta at Dorney Lake this weekend.
Chess
On Sunday, eight players from the Winchester B team squad participated in a junior tournament run by the Northamptonshire Schools Chess Association, at Stowe School. The standard of the competition was high, with the top player rated over 2,000.
The boys competed well in all of their 44 games. Our prize-winners were: Xerxes Gulabani (JP, Hopper's) who took the Under 14 title on 4/6; Maks Fedorovskyy (VI Book 2, Kenny's) with 2nd in the Under 18 category with 5/6, just ahead of Adrian Leung (VI Book 2, Phil's), also on 5/6, based on the tie-break.
Message from the Bursar
Parents will be aware of the data breach, which took place in April, with fraudulent emails purporting to be from the Admissions team at Winchester College. We take the security of your data very seriously and I invite you to read my full update on our investigation via the link below.
We welcomed parents and members of the school community for a Confirmation Service on Sunday evening, held at Winchester Cathedral. 23 pupils were confirmed, and two were also baptised at the service, led by Bishop Geoff Annas.
Queen Elizabeth II is the most widely-travelled monarch in history, and she has finally made it to Moberly Library. This week boys are invited to join Her Majesty in the Blackwell Room to see The Big Jubilee Read display, which will be there until Leave-out.
The Big Jubilee Read is a collection of 70 books chosen to celebrate the Commonwealth. Selected by a panel of Commonwealth experts, academics, booksellers and librarians, there are 10 titles from each decade of the Queen’s reign, which span 31 countries and six continents.
Entrance & Election
Congratulations to all our 2022 intake. They have come from 60 different schools, all have passed their exams and we look forward to them joining our community in September.
Charities
On Wykeham Day, pupils will attempt to cycle the 1,274 miles from Winchester to Lviv, Ukraine on static bikes to raise money for the EmbraceMe Foundation. The Foundation offers humanitarian support to Ukranians affected by the conflict. This challenge is a pupil-led initiative organised with the school's Charities Committee.
It is hoped that sufficient funds will be raised to purchase an ambulance that can go to Ukraine and help to alleviate the shortage as many ambulances have been destroyed by shelling.
Donations to the Foundation would be gratefully received through the link below. Parents are invited to cheer on the cyclists in person on 18 June.
Located in the JCR building by the QEII Theatre, the shop stocks items of up-to-books clothing and Masuri sports kit, as well as new small-sized suits and jackets. Second hand school clothing is welcomed for sale; items should be washed or dry cleaned, as appropriate, and given to Matrons.
Open during term time for pupils on Thursdays 1630 - 1800 and Fridays 1000 - 1300, and by appointment for parents/guardians.
