Creative Writing Collaboration

The Creative Writing Society recently celebrated the culmination of their collaboration with Winton Community Academy

The project began in February with online sessions and Teams meetings. The writers then worked on their stories over the Easter break, and this final session was a chance to meet in person and share the results. A positive work-ethic and passion for the art of creative writing was displayed throughout the months spent on the exercise.

Look out for the anthology of writing from this project that will be published in due course.

Learning

Young Debaters

At the end of the Easter holidays Alex and Victor (pictured, both MP, Hopper's) participated in the final of the International Competition for Young Debaters, achieving a remarkable seventh-place overall finish.

The competition sees pupils under the age of sixteen from around the world compete in British parliamentary-format debates. This year’s final was held at the Oxford Union, where Alex and Victor managed to beat tough, domestic competition from St Paul’s Girls’, Brighton College and Queen Elizabeth Boys’ School, as well as international schools from countries including Korea, China, and Australia.

Finishing seventh at this prestigious international competition is an exceptional result to cap off a very successful debating season for the College. Other highlights include Matthew Howard (V Book, Chawker's) and Rtiwik Mittapalli's (V Book, College) perfomances at the final of the Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition, and Alex Prvulovich (VI Book 2, College) and Hugo Cartwright (VI Book 1, Kenny's) breaking into the top fifty at the final of Cambridge Schools’ competition.

Sporting News

Cricket

On Saturday, Lords travelled to Marlborough College for their John Harvey Trophy game, which coincided with the two teams competing for the Dancy Cup.

The Dancy Cup, introduced in 2020, is a new annual fixture between Winchester and Marlborough that commemorates the life of John Dancy OW, former Winchester don and Headmaster of Marlborough. First contested last year and won by Winchester, we successfully retained the cup this time with a 58 run win, thanks to runs from Henry Nicholls (V Book, Furley's) and Zain Malik (VI Book 2, Hopper's), and 3 wickets taken by Callum Whillock (VI Book 2, Chawker's) and Malik.

This success concluded a good week for our cricketers as they also progressed in both the National T20 Cup, and National Cricket Paper U17 Cup, before winning against Bradfield, also for the John Harvey Trophy.

Rugby

Congratulations to Sixth Form entrant Will Matthews (VI Book 2, Kenny's), who played in his first match for Hampshire U17 Rugby vs Sussex at Hove on Sunday. Will was in the starting team at outside centre (13) and played very well.
