Music
On Sunday 13 March 2022, the College hosted a performance of Mr Oliver Tarney’s St Mark Passion: a powerful setting of the narrative of Jesus’ Passion and Crucifixion, based on St Mark’s account, with a libretto by English don Mrs Lucia Quinault. Winchester College Glee Club was joined by eight brilliant soloists, a professional orchestra, and a professional choir, Sansara, who sang the semi-chorus parts.
Societies
On Thursday 5 May, at 6pm, students from Winchester College, St Swithun’s School and Peter Symonds College will take over Flint Court for Resilience 2022, a fashion show and auction in aid of local children's hospice charity Naomi House & Jacksplace.
The goal of Resilience is to showcase the phenomenal breadth of expression we have at our disposal every day when choosing what to wear. The Sustainable Fashion Society began as a collaboration between Winchester College and St. Swithun’s School but Resilience 2022 will play host to three separate “Fashion House” entities: Winchester College, St. Swithun’s School and Peter Symonds College.

Rowing
Monday 14 March saw a return of the Schools' Head of the River race, from Chiswick Bridge to Putney with 313 crews from across the UK and Ireland. Our 1st VIII, a relatively inexperienced crew, delivered a solid performance, finishing 12th out of 26, and our talented J15 VIII were tested on the tricky Tideway course, finishing 8th out of 15, putting some 40 seconds on a Pangbourne crew that had been nipping at their heels at recent events.
Wednesday 16 March was the Junior Sculling Head at Dorney Lake, with the J16 quad, J15 quad, J14 quad and J14 octuple competing. The highlight of the day was the J14 octuple finishing 2nd out of 48 crews, a remarkable achievement for these young men. A silver medal so early in their rowing career is extremely exciting.
Fencing
On Tuesday 15 March we sent eight pupils to compete at the annual Public Schools’ Fencing Championship, held over two days at Lee Valley Athletics Centre, London. This is the biggest event in the fencing season, with our matches against Eton coming a distant second; it takes place after our inter-school matches, and so provides a yardstick to measure how far we’ve come since playing other schools.
We entered five categories and our most successful fencer was John Carrell (JP, College), who was placed an impressive 12th out of 78 in the Boys Mount-Haes Foil. John is pictured in the black socks.
Inter-house competition
The inter-house science quiz, known as Wilson Pot, took place on Thursday last week.
The junior quiz was won for the third time in five years by Toye’s (pictured), with Cook’s 2nd, and College 3rd.
The senior quiz and Wilson Pot itself was narrowly won by Furley’s, in a high-scoring year for the competition. Kenny’s came 2nd after a storming multiple choice round, and Hopper’s 3rd.
On Wednesday of last week the Final of the Greek and Latin verse recitation competition was held in Musā. The thirteen finalists had battled their way through heats to make it to the Final, and their performances of passages of Homer and Virgil were polished and captivating. The adjudicator, Professor Philomen Probert of the University of Oxford, judged that the following were the winners in their categories:
Junior Greek: Ben Aubury (V Book, College)
Junior Latin: Felix Edmondson (MP, College)
Senior Greek: William Thomson (VI Book 2, College)
Senior Latin: James Fulcher (VI Book 1, Beloe's)
The Queen’s Silver Medal itself was the prize for the Senior Latin category, and was won by James Fulcher, who only just made it back in time to perform from the Final of a national French debating competition.
TraderSoc is the school’s new investment and trading society that has been running for the past academic year. We have enjoyed numerous talks by experienced professionals, including some OWs, and have been preparing students for the competition to come.
We currently have 81 pupils and staff members competing in the school's first ever Virtual Stock Market competition, which will run until Friday 17 June. There will be prizes for the top three wealthiest players at the end of term.
We hope the contestants use all the preparatory resources we have provided for them throughout - we will publish weekly updates including leaderboards, the current market conditions and any big changes in the stock market.
