Parents' Events
On Friday evening, Winchester College Society hosted the first live quiz evening for parents. Ten teams took part in New Hall with Yuriy Evdokimov (father of a Trantite) as quizmaster - a far cry from the staid image of Magnus Magnusson.
Some fierce competition developed during the course of the quiz. Table 5, hosted by the Spearings (taking over from the Margolins at short notice), took First Prize with 57 points, and have won a private tour of the College Archives to be led by the College Archivist. Prox. acc. (honourable mentions) go to Table 7 (hosted by the Haddads) scoring 56 points, and Table 2 (the Edmonsons) with 55 points. There was equally tight competition for the wooden spoon…
Well done to the Parents Events Committee and Win Coll Soc for organising, and many thanks to the catering team for laying on a delicious half time curry.
Friends' Events
In the first of a series of talks to be arranged by the Warden, parents are reminded that they are welcome to hear Sir Richard Stagg himself speak on the subject of Afghanistan tomorrow evening (Wednesday 9 February) at 1900 in New Hall, with drinks from 1830.
Please register and book online to attend.
Mr Charles Park OW, collector of ceramics and studio pottery, will give a lecture on Hans Coper, one of the world’s best known 20th century ceramic artists on Thursday 19 February, 1900-2000.
Please register and book online to attend.
Rugby is making a return to Winchester in the form of 7s. So far this term, the squad has played at ACS Cobham and enjoyed a successful encounter. They have also trained with established rugby-playing schools, such as Canford and Bryanston. Last weekend the senior squad tested themselves against some very strong rugby playing schools at the South Coast 7s.

On Saturday the Boat Club made the trek to Gloucester to compete in the Wycliffe Big Head. All year groups raced down the 4,500m course in a wide variety of boat types. The J14 squad fielded an 'octo' (8 men skulling with two oars and a cox) that finished a whole four minutes faster than the second-place boat in their category. This was particularly impressive as they report that one of the rowers managed to catch a crab just as they were passing through a narrow bridge!
Makyth Ventures Event
Winchester College’s entrepreneurship and innovation hub, Makyth Ventures, is excited to invite parents to its first event of 2022, entitled "The Deep Science of Crypto" with Mr Tom Walton-Pocock OW.
Tom is founder of Geometry, an angel investment network interested in early-stage technology startups. During the event, Tom will guide the audience through the basics of Web3, a new iteration of the World Wide Web based on the blockchain, and introduce the science behind it.
Join Makyth Ventures for a fascinating deep dive where you will learn how these new sciences, built on ancient foundations, are being brought together to build the new world computer.

Congratulations to Gleb Koval and Charlie Camilleri (both V Book 2, Freddie's), who have made it to the final of CyberCenturion VIII, a national cyber security competition designed by the American Air Force Association.
Gleb and Charlie, the College's A team in the competition, came through three online rounds where they attempted to discover all the security vulnerabilities within various operating systems. They now have a place in the National Finals, to be held in April.
Congratulations to Alexander Boys-Smith (JP, Freddie's), who has had an article on architecture accepted for publication by New Design Ideas journal. His article is about the architecture featured in Star Wars and what it tells us about architecture for ‘Goodies’ and ‘Baddies’.
