Message from the Undermaster
Last week the government announced revised guidance on vaccinations for 12-17 year olds after a COVID-19 infection. It is recommended that young people aged 12-17 (who are not in a high risk group) should wait 12 weeks after a positive test for COVID-19 for their first (or second if aged 16-17) vaccine dose. Please see the government guidance here.
For 16 – 17-year-olds, the government announced that they are eligible for their second dose 12 weeks after their first dose. Please see the government guidance here.
Since our Sixth Form had its first vaccination clinic at Winchester on 30 September 2021, most of our Sixth Form pupils will be able to have their second dose in the middle of the Christmas holidays. Parents who wish to have their son vaccinated with a second dose would best do so at a local walk-in centre during the Christmas break.

On Tuesday 16 November we hosted a qualifying round for the National Schools Chess Tournament, fielding four Winchester teams in addition to our A team, who automatically qualified for the regional stages due to their strong rating. The A, B and C teams will now go through to the regional stages.
All year groups were involved, including five pupils from Junior Part: George Ball (Chawker's), Xerxes Gulabani (Hopper's), Ronin Haider (Hopper's), Eson Pu (Hopper's), Wilson Tang (College). Xerxes and Wilson played especially well for their age and fought out a draw in their head-to-head match. Both are promising players who could have a bright future in the A-team.
The national finals of the competition, contested by the top 16 schools, will take place in the summer, and we hope for another strong performance.

Computer Science
Congratulations to Zachary Yen (MP, College) and Zachary Lees (V Book, Freddie's), who both scored a perfect 200/200 in the recent UK BEBRAS Computational thinking competition.
Both boys and other high scoring Wykehamists will go through to the Oxford University Computing Challenge in February next year.
On Wednesday 17 November, Winchester’s General Knowledge team became champions of the Wessex region of the Schools’ Challenge Competition, after a string of victories over teams from Bournemouth School for Girls (BSG), Millfield School and the home side at Bryanston School.
In the final, BSG equalised with only a minute and a half to go, but Winchester managed to pull ahead to leave a finishing score of 560-450.
This is the first year Winchester has entered the Schools’ Challenge, which mimics the format of University Challenge. Our team, made up of captain Ollie Reynolds (College, VI Book 1), James Hunter (Beloe's, VI Book 2), Harry Latimer (College, MP) and Edward Thomson (College, MP), are looking forward to their next match after Christmas, which will determine the best quizzers in the South West.
Please join us for a candlelit tour of Cloister, a glass of wine, and a short a capella concert by Cantores Episcopi, followed by a Q&A session on the Everest expeditions with Bill Norton (OW, 1946 – 51) and Mr Adam Rattray (Head of Art History).
Bill is the surviving son of Lt. Col ‘Teddy’ Norton, leader of the 1924 Everest expedition. In 1924, Colonel Norton reached 28,120 ft., a world altitude record that would last until 1952, and a height record of climbing without oxygen that was only broken in 1978. Bill will talk to us about his father’s climbing career, and the British Mount Everest expeditions of 1921, 1922 and 1924. He will explain the ‘Norton route’, and why his father Teddy had to turn back a tantalising 912 feet from the summit.
Makyth Ventures
Makyth Ventures would like to invite parents to virtually attend a two-day event where the most promising LSE entrepreneurs from around the world will gather at Winchester College for a chance to win up to £20,000 to develop their ventures.
In collaboration with LSE Generate, the London School of Economics' entrepreneurship hub, this experience will bring together aspiring entrepreneurs from both LSE and Winchester College in a stimulating programme during which you will be able to hear from seasoned investors on the impact ecosystem, a distinguished military leader on his lessons of leadership and a selection of keynotes form the LSE and Winchester College student communities. The event will culminate with LSE Generate's funding competition final that will see LSE entrepreneurs pitching their businesses to a panel of judges, Dragons' Den-style.
