Music at Winchester
This year’s House Singing Competition was adjudicated by Alexander L’Estrange, a renowned choral composer, arranger and jazz musician.
The Julian Smith Cup was awarded to Freddie’s for their beautiful performance of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner’s motet Locus iste. Freddie’s was also listed third for that same performance in Schuster Pot, with College’s 80s Medley, in a fantastic home-grown arrangement by Christopher Brain, taking the runner-up place.
The top prize in Schuster Pot was won by Furley’s with their version of Billy Joel’s The Longest Time, described by the adjudicator as having “stacks of rhythm and energy from the start”.
In Bobber Pot, Beloe’s were awarded third place for their performance of the 1980s hit by Wham! Take me up before you go-go. In second place were Furley’s with ABBA’s Gimme Gimme Gimme, in a “commited and unanimous” performance. The winners of Bobber Pot were Toye’s, under the energetic direction of Kit Colville, with Toto’s Africa, which the adjudicator commended for its energy and attention to detail.
The full recording of all songs will be made available in a future edition of Winchester Weekly.
Sport at Winchester
This weekend, Winchester College came first and won the National Schools’ Croquet Tournament for the first time, ending Farlingaye’s six-year winning streak.
Our team of Roger Holwerda (Trant's), Taanvir Sood (College) and August Deeming (College) brought home the National Schools’ trophy and shield, presented to them by Quiller Barrett, President of the Croquet Association. Additionally, each member of the team scored some impressive individual wins, and all ranked within the top 7 nationally in the Croquet Association and Golf Croquet Junior Championships.
Well done all!
Beyond the curriculum
We are honoured to be hosting a fantastic array of speakers for this year's annual Studium programme which includes; historians and economists, adventurers and journalists, entrepreneurs and television producers, engineers, politicians and scientists.
Each year, Studium provides an invaluable experience, hearing directly from leaders in all manner of fields, and gaining insight into areas far beyond the curriculum. This year's programme includes Chris Lubbe - former bodyguard to Nelson Mandela and anti-apartheid activist, Kate Phillips - Controller, BBC Entertainment and Harry Clarke - founder of RingGo.
This year, we will also be joined by more than 50 pupils from local schools, as well as guests from The Friends of Winchester College.
