A message from the Second Master
Dear Parents,
While many areas of school life have seen a return to normality, COVID-19 continues to affect certain parts of our operations. More specifically, along with the rest of the UK, we are not immune to staff shortages in catering.
We continue to provide the high standard of food the boys are used to, but on some occasions, we are having to make some minor adjustments to ensure minimal disruption to meals. These changes, such as some houses combining for teatime meals, are temporary and will be reversed as our catering staffing levels improve.
With kind regards,
Mr Nick Wilks
Music at Winchester
In a normal term, two or three pupils take music diploma exams. However, in June, fourteen Winchester College candidates gained their diplomas.
Congratulations to all!
Sailing at Winchester
It was a wonderful weekend on the water for our sailing team, who beat Radley to win the Mermaid Trophy at the Seaview Tri-school Regatta on the Isle of Wight. The Old Wykehamist team also competed and were crowned the overall winners.
Congratulations to the team for some fine sailing and to the Captain, Ed Beveridge (VI Book 1, Cook's), and Commodore, Marcus Cloke Browne (VI Book 1, Toye's), for their thoughtful leadership.
Winchester College Alumni
Last Thursday, 9 September 2021, the College assembled to receive Ad Portas General Sir Nick Carter, an Old Wykehamist and Chief of the Defence Staff, head of the British Armed Forces.
After a gap of nearly ten years, we were delighted that the traditional Winchester ceremony of Ad Portas took place. The occasion was a fitting celebration to mark the beginning of a new school year and a return, we hope, to normality.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Inspired by the College’s Vision for the 21st Century which announced a greater prioritisation of entrepreneurship and innovation, we are delighted to announce the launch of Makyth Ventures.
Makyth Ventures is Winchester College’s new entrepreneurship & innovation hub, established by seasoned entrepreneurs and focused on equipping Wykehamists with the tools that will help them bring their boldest business ideas to life.
Events
A reminder that all parents (both new and existing) are warmly invited to attend a drinks reception at New Hall in October to celebrate the new school year and to meet or reconnect with other parents.
Events at Winchester
Between 16 September – 1 October 2021, a new exhibition will be held at Winchester College to commemorate the lives of four former pupils who played a leading role in the British attempt to map, survey, and summit Mount Everest in the 1920s.
Community
On 3 October 2021, Mr James McKinnel, History don and Housemaster Elect (Turner's) will be running the London Marathon.
Mr McKinnel will be running in aid of the Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund which helps provide facilities for schools in Uganda, many of which have been particularly hard hit by the COVID pandemic.
