I'm delighted to have joined Winchester College and I very much look forward to getting to know the boys as quickly as possible and supporting them in all their activities.
I am particularly excited as we look ahead to the arrival of day students and girls into the Sixth Form next September; the lion's share of my role in the immediate term is to help the College prepare for these changes.
I have been aware of the ethos of a Winchester education for many years, as well as the tremendous benefits flowing from it. To me, extending this offering to girls and day pupils means maintaining the best that Winchester represents whilst widening the opportunity for others to experience and enrich it. I believe that both they and the College will benefit.
I am very grateful for the warm welcome I have received and I look forward to coming alongside the wider community in the months ahead.
A Message from the Headmaster
With the first week of term underway, the Headmaster provides an update on what has happened over the summer, including news of exam results, a reminder of the COVID precautions in place, as well as a warm invitation to all parents to join us for a variety of school events.
School calendar
All parents are welcome to visit the school throughout the term to attend a variety of events. To find out more about what's on, please access the school's online calendar. A more detailed music diary is also available.
Sports Fixtures
A more detailed sporting calendar, including weekly sports reports, can be found here. To access your son’s team sheet, please use the password - TeamWinColl
With inter-school fixtures resuming we look forward to welcoming family members to the College to watch sport once again. Match tea arrangements will be in place for parents and visiting parents at Musa and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. We would kindly ask that you remain mindful of social distancing, hand hygiene and face-mask requirements. Parking is a challenge around the school campus, even more so while we are in the midst of building our new Sports Centre. There is limited availability outside our temporary sports centre (postcode SO23 9PG), some availability for on-street parking for 2-4 hours, and a Park and Ride 10-15 minutes’ walk away (postcode SO23 9PH).
Communication
The Winchester Weekly newsletter is sent to parents every Tuesday during term time and aims to provide an overview of key news, events and stories about the school community.
The school's social media channels can also be found at Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
All houses also have an individual Twitter account to give you a more personal insight into life in your son's time at school.
Events
All parents (both new and existing) are warmly invited to attend a drinks reception to celebrate the new school year and to meet or reconnect with other parents.
The events will take place between 18:30-20:30 at New Hall on the College grounds on the following dates:
JP & MP parents: Friday 1 October 2021
V Book & VI Book parents: Wednesday 6 October 2021
There have been a number of significant achievements by pupils over the holiday, these include:
Brandon Chan (Cook's, VI Book 1) came 3rd worldwide in the independent open category at the International Economics Olympiad this summer. Featuring 44 different nations, Brandon was the highest-scoring UK contestant and achieved a near-perfect score in one of his exams.
Jona Cordonier Gehring (College, V Book) won a Gold Award for his entry in the Cambridge Schools Eco Council's 2021 Eco-Challenge. The panel included Justice Professor Marcel Szabo of the Constitutional Court and the United Nations Human Rights Commission Office.
Congratulations to Ben Yu (Toye's, VI Book 1) for his highly commended piece in this year's Orwell Youth Prize. Winners have to submit a piece of writing which addresses important social issues and avenues for change.
Congratulations to all three!
Sport at Winchester
Over the course of seven days during the summer holiday, the project team for the school's new Sports Centre successfully installed the impressive folded structure which will form the new swimming pool roof.
Winchester College Society Telephone Campaign
Over the course of two weeks during the summer holiday, the Wykehamical community raised £230,000 towards the school’s bursary provision, far exceeding the £180,000 target.
The team of 12 young OWs spoke to 550 Old Wykehamist’s and parents during the course of this year's campaign. Gifts large and small, one-off and regular were all added together to achieve this wonderful result.
Thank you to all those members of our community who took the time to speak to one of our young callers, or who kindly provided a donation.
