My role at Winchester College is to help run the football programme alongside the Director of Sport. In non-COVID times, we have more than 220 boys out playing football, all with different levels of ability. We play some great football schools on our circuit and I enjoy the challenge of developing a game plan to try and get the best out of us individually and collectively.
I have worked in the elite environment and try to share my experience with the boys. Hard work is a must and I ask the boys not to waste a session and to give it everything they've got - the best players in the world do this every day! We have 1 JP, 1 MP and 2 Vth Book Football Scholars who get additional technical work during the week, as well as a strength and conditioning session. These sessions are to work on certain aspects of their play to benefit them and the team they play for. Away from school, we have four children to keep us busy, and I enjoy a game of golf whenever I can.
A message from the Second Master & Director of Studies
The College will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day through a specially designed programme in Div. Boys will be encouraged to focus on this year’s theme “Be the Light in the Darkness” which will include material on the many acts of courageous resistance that took place. They will also be given the opportunity to undertake the virtual tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau which has been produced by TCBC School Tours in conjunction with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.
A message from the Head of PSHEE
Next week we have two exciting PSHEE events for pupils and parents.
Relationships & Sex Education: Parents’ Forum: Wednesday 3rd February, 1830-1930 – via MS Teams
Expert providers Ithappens will be speaking to all parents about relationships and sex education. The session is designed to help parents feel comfortable about talking to their children about healthy relationships of all kinds, about sexual health and about the challenges that young people face. As well as discussing what is covered in the pupil sessions (which also take place throughout the day on Wednesday 3rd), there is the opportunity for parents to have their say, by filling in this survey, on any topics they might wish to learn more about, or questions they would like to be addressed. We would be delighted if you can come along and please do fill in the survey.
Laura Bates: Gender Inequality, Everyday Sexism and Young People: Thursday 4th February, 1900-2000 – via MS Teams
We are delighted to welcome Laura Bates to Winchester College. Laura runs the everyday sexism project, which aims to record the everyday experiences of ordinary women who face sexism in ordinary places. Amongst her many accolades are a British Empire Medal for services to gender equality and she has been named woman of the year by Cosmopolitan, Red Magazine and The Sunday Times Magazine. She will be discussing the way in which gender inequality shapes society and our ideas about men, women and relationships. We'll end by looking at positive things both parents and schools can do together to tackle the problem and support pupils. Laura will be introduced by our Fellow Clarissa Farr, formerly High Mistress of St Paul’s Girls’ School, London.
If you would like to attend either of these two events, please email me.
A House From Home
In the second instalment of the new series celebrating the uniqueness of Winchester's boarding houses, Edward Haslam-Jones shares his fondest memories of life in Trant's, taking in stunts, sound effects and sword fights.
Sport at Winchester
Despite a challenging 2020, progress on Winchester College's new state-of-the-art Sports Centre continues, as the school looks ahead to the opening in 2022.
One of the most notable absences from the rhythm of Common Time is Winchester College Football (commonly known as Winkies). Not just a game, but a culture of camaraderie, rivalry and tradition.
Missing his position on the sidelines, Rtvik Patel, Aulae Prae (Head Prefect, College), shares his love of the game and all that goes with it.
A familiar landmark on College Street, P&G Wells is thought to be the oldest bookshop and bindery in operation in the country and has enjoyed a long association with the College. With the College currently closed, local businesses naturally suffer the absence of boys and dons, none more so than P&G Wells.
Each boy was sent a login for the P&G Wells website at the start of the year, which they can use to make an order online, and is paid for by Blue Bills. A wide variety of stationery is available. Delivery will be charged at cost and confirmed on receipt of order. Also, books can be ordered by boys and parents for home delivery through their online shop.
Linguistics Society Lecture
Pupils can discover how languages are constructed in tonight's Linguistic Society lecture from the brilliant David J. Peterson. Creator of naturalistic languages for Game of Thrones, Thor: The Dark World, and The Witcher, the virtual event will take place this evening at 8pm.
And finally...
