This academic year we are called to reinvent ourselves as teachers and educators, to find new ways of interacting with our pupils and colleagues, to plan lessons in new experimental ways. We might not be able to enjoy life as usual, but the interesting conversations I've had with my colleagues have most definitely been among the most precious moments I've had at Winchester. The Equality Society, where important topics for our students and ourselves are debated, and the Italian Society I co-founded both encourage a fruitful exchange of ideas.
The fundamental part of this community are our pupils: interacting with so many bright and varied minds, being involved in their life stories is one of the best aspects of becoming a teacher.
A message from the second master
When the country went into lockdown last spring, we set out some of the ways in which we can all maintain a sense of well-being and put these together in a well-being document. The circumstances are a little different as we enter 2021. We have the prospect of a vaccine, even though this is not imminent for most of us. It is colder, wetter and darker than it was in the spring, but we can look forward to the weather improving as we head out of the winter months. All this means a slightly different emphasis on our well-being.
Last week, I sent some information through to the boys about ways to take care of themselves. I hope that both you and they will find the information useful and informative.

A message from the Director of Studies
The first exeat this weekend (22-24 January) will run, in teaching terms, as normal with lessons finishing at 1300 on Friday afternoon. Lessons will resume at the start of the first hour on Monday morning at 0845.
Music at Winchester
A string quartet of four VI Book 2 boys (Brandon Chan, Greg Wong, Richmond Yeung and Paul Lim) has won the Chamber Music section (13-18 years) of the Golden Classical Music Awards. As their prize, they receive an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York, which it is hoped will be realised. Enjoy the video of their performance of Borodin's String Quartet No. 2: Nocturne at the link below.
Eight debaters from JP and MP took part in the Oxford regional round of the International Competition for Young Debaters last weekend. Boys competed in three debates against strong contenders from schools in Oxford and Hampshire.
The day’s competition was won by Matthew Howard (Chawker’s) and August Deeming (College) in a topical debate on whether the world would be a better place without strong emotions. Two teams will now progress to finals day, which, under normal circumstances, is held at either the Oxford or Cambridge Union. Charlie Edwards (College) and Ritwik Mittapalli (College) make up the second qualifying team.
Congratulations are due to William Thomson (College) and Sean Jaffe (College) who both achieved scores in the top 24 places out of around 1,700 entrants to the British Mathematical Olympiad. Both boys were thus invited to take a selection test for a chance to represent the UK at the Romanian Master of Mathematics competition in February.
Starting the spring term in the UK's third national lockdown, Winchester's Sen Co Prae (one of the Head Boys) encourages the whole school community to keep mentally healthy by setting personal goals, remaining physically active, and participating in the challenges and inter-house competitions being set by senior pupils this term to keep up morale.
Sports Scholarships
Southampton FC midfielder Oriol Romeu visited Winchester last month to share the secrets of his success with the sports scholars.
Sport at Winchester
Sport at Winchester continues during lockdown with regular updates from Director of Sport, Mr Mark Burley. This Thursday will play host to a virtual House competition where the House with the most recorded number of pupils taking part in a physical activity will be the winner. In addition, the WinColl Strava Club continues with boys keeping a digital track of their sporting efforts.
This week's video message will be shared with boys later this week and provides tips and simple exercises to keep active in lockdown. We hope it also proves helpful for parents.
A House From Home series
This term we mark Lockdown 3.0 with a new series celebrating what members of the community are missing about the central part of their lives at Winchester: their houses. Cook's kick us off with a look at their House 'best bits' in this video.
Collections
As part of its extensive collections, the school has around 500 watercolours and drawings from the 18th and 20th centuries, which have now been digitised to make them accessible to as wide an audience as possible.
And finally...
