Every September the school takes part in Heritage Open Days: England's largest, free heritage festival. This year we're inviting everyone to enjoy our programme online. Two new films have been created. One focuses on the rich history of the Fellows' Library, exploring its rarest and most interesting books. For the second, I take visitors into the hidden spaces of Winchester and follow in the footsteps of George Mallory OW, scaling the rooftops for some breathtaking views of the school and its surroundings.
When not teaching art history, div or climbing towers, I plan lectures and talks for our 500 plus members in my capacity as Director of the Friends. Typically we offer concerts, drinks parties, private tours, and even sketching lessons. In the current climate, we are hosting an exciting online programme, and I encourage parents to consider joining. Find out more here.
Each week the Headmaster will provide a video update on latest school developments. Please find this week's message at the link below.
Co-curricular update
If COVID-19 has brought about one positive outcome, it is the need to be flexible and adaptable. Flexibility has been the approach to our sports provision over these first two weeks. Opportunities to play traditional summer sports such as cricket, tennis, football and rowing have been well received and the introduction of touch rugby has also seen many boys refamiliarise themselves with the oval ball. In addition, Adventure Education activities such as mountain biking and canoeing, as well as sessions focusing on developing speed, power and general conditioning have catered for many looking for a more individual challenge. With cross country, aikido, fencing, rackets and fives all still on offer, the boys have not been short of choice.
Co-curricular update
Pupils have been enjoying a wide range of drama workshops focused on process rather than product. They have been getting to grips with physical theatre, vocal techniques and explored well-known Shakespearian characters and reworked them for our time. They have improvised complex and moving pieces of theatre in just one hour. Creativity and good humour have been in abundance, and drama has provided them with an excellent vehicle for reconnecting with others in their house.
Boys have been signing up to practise their instruments in Music School. Up to house, they have started work on the House Singing Competition, with senior boys leading year-group rehearsals.
Co-curricular update
It has been great to have the boys populate the Art School again. The paint, sculpture and printmaking studios have been open to welcome new men in JP, as well as the familiar faces from other year groups. Still-life arrangements have been skilfully drawn, personal projects that were started during the summer break have continued and many have taken the opportunity to independently explore the coursework themes. The print workshop has been back in action with some drypoint etching workshops, skateboards have been personalised, sound recordings edited and summer work laid out to be admired.
This week Mill was pleased to open up its workshop doors once again, welcoming all Junior Part men for their DT induction. Following the inductions, the workshop and classrooms have been open for boys in house bubbles to pursue their creativity, whether that be exploring CAD modelling to strengthening woodwork skills among others.
