Wykeham Day charity fundraising
The Charities Committee will be embarking on a special fundraising event at this year's Wykeham Day entitled, 'Carry For Climate'. An estimated 500 pupils will take part in this interhouse competition; the aim is to carry a dummy as far as possible over 5 hours on a stretcher in support of Winchester Action on the Climate Crisis (WinACC), the school’s designated local climate charity.
WinACC works to bring communities, councils, organisations, and people together in Winchester District to respond to the climate crisis and create positive, sustainable change. The £5,000 fundraising target hopes to contribute to the installation of solar panels across 20 community buildings in the city.
These solar panels will slash expensive energy costs and without donations local communities could never afford the expensive set up cost.
You can find out more about the event and donate, via the link below.
Sport
Recently, the College Boat Club travelled to Dorney Lake to participate in the National Schools' Regatta.
A successful competition in all categories was highlighted by Lawrence (G) and Hugo (E) taking home a bronze medal, and Martha (E - photo #2) making history as the first girl from the College to race at the event, making it all the way to the finals in singles competition.
Congratulations team!
Sunday’s Baroque concert ‘Les Goûts-réuis'- a tour of European musical styles from the 16th-18th century', was a demonstration of the breadth of music making at Winchester.
Our growing viol consort and various baroque ensemble combinations featuring recorder, oboe, bassoon, viola da gamba and harpsichord alongside strings gave committed performances of works including Bach, Charpentier, Holborne and Gibbons.
It was a particular pleasure this year that they were joined by solo singers and that it drew such a large audience.
You can view a clip from the concert below.
Music
Leading choral composer, Dr David Bednall was the adjudicator for The Kirby Prize for pupil composition on Sunday.
The finalists in each category, Vocal / Junior Instrumental / Music Technology / Senior Instrumental, all worked with Dr Bednall during the afternoon before presenting live performances in the evening which were rapturously received by the audience.
The composers enlisted the help of friends and staff to play and sing, and some directed their own pieces. Dr Bednall commented on the quality of the work, but particularly that the pieces all had an authentic voice and really worked.
Congratulations to all the finalists, and to the winners: Michael (G), Winston (X), Caelan (C) and Dominik (H).
On Saturday 8th June, a team of 17 Sixth formers from Winchester and Charterhouse walked 50 miles from Old Cloister, Winchester to South Africa Cloister, Charterhouse to honour OW George Mallory (1900 to 1905).
It was 8th June 1924 when Mallory and his climbing companion, Sandy Irvine set out on their final audacious ascent to the summit of Everest, never to be seen again. A century later, the 2024 Mallory Centenary Team were joined by Mallory's grandson, Stephen Mallory for breakfast in Hall, an Everest lecture and an Act of Commemoration in Old Cloister, before the team covered over 1000m of ascent and 50 miles of breathtaking countryside of Hampshire and Surrey that George Mallory had so loved.
August (X), member of the Mallory Centenary Team writes, "walking along the crystal-clear Itchen and across the green Surrey downs, combined with the presence of Mallory’s grandson, Stephen, and some healthy competition between Winchester and Charterhouse, the weekend provided an unforgettable adventure in memory of an inspirational OW, George Mallory.
