In celebration of the King's Coronation, the newly formed 70-strong Winchester College Symphonic Wind Band gave its first performance on Monday evening. Comprised of pupils and dons, the concert provided an extraordinary sound as musicians of all levels played together.
The ensemble was conducted by accomplished trumpet player, educator and composer, Ryan Linham, a First Class graduate from the Royal College of Music.
All pupils, dons and staff enjoyed a celebratory lunch to mark the upcoming Coronation. The lunch concluded with the National Anthem, and the College's own anthem, Domum.

Recently, five College pupils took part in Round 2 of the UK Linguistics Olympiad.
William (X) has, for the second year running, come in the top 8 entries in Round 1 of the UK Linguistics Olympiad (out of 89 competitors), which means he progresses to the national training camp in Edinburgh, from which the 4-person UK Linguistics Team will be selected.
The top 25% of Round 2 entries received distinctions (so about 20 in total). The next 25% were awarded merits, including Zachary (X).
William’s top-8 Distinction result places him in the top 0.29% of all candidates that entered (2,700 total Round 1 entries).
Our other three Round 2 candidates, Kate (A), Felix (X), and Anders (K), (all of whom received Round 1 Gold awards) also performed admirably and deserve congratulations for making the top 5% overall and reaching Round 2.
Sport
Lords XI and Second XI cricket teams travelled to Portsmouth Grammar School last week for a pair of 40 over games.
After losing the coin toss, some strong bowling from Seb (D) and Callum (F) to start put the Lords team in a good position. Despite some excellent bowling initially from PGS, Zain (I) and Chris (A) robustly battled with decent running between the wickets to settle the team. The team conceded three quick wickets but the partnership of Dom (A) and Seb played freely, securing the win with 16 overs remaining.
After a strong opening at bat, with Patrick (A) making 50, the Second XI hit some adversity, falling from 128-2 to 138-8, before pushing through to 157-8 after 30 overs. Some superb bowling from the team, particularly Tom (A) who took a double hat trick, steered the team home to secure the win.
During the Easter break, a team of College pupils travelled to the Brecon Beacons for their Duke of Edinburgh Gold practice session.
The five day, four night trek served as a practice run for their Gold assessed expedition across the Lake District over Leave-out.
The team faced a mixture of weather, including sunshine, rain and overcast conditions during their 9-hour days, but reached the finish line through teamwork and determination.
Outreach
Last Friday, students from Park Community School and Everest Community Academy visited the College for an afternoon of sessions on Shakespeare.
The visit began with a drama workshop in the QEII theatre, followed by a lesson in our Treasury museum with an edition of Shakespeare's First Folio, as well as other works by his contemporaries.
To end the day, the students attended the Professor Smith lecture on the First Folio.
May
Last Friday leading Shakespeare scholar Professor Emma Smith addressed a large audience of pupils and visitors on the importance of the First Folio. With fewer than 240 copies remaining in the world, the College is extremely fortunate to own one, which is currently on display in Treasury. Professor Smith spoke engagingly about its significance in the evolution of English language as well as our understanding of the playwright and his contemporaries.
This month we have experts on North Korea, the Renaissance Masters, and Music Therapy.
On Friday 19 May at 1930, the College will host a Moot Court featuring the Hellenic Republic v Trustees of the British Museum to debate the Elgin Marbles ownership question. The lead prosecutors are Nicholas le Poidevin KC and Boston public prosecutor, Roger L. Michel Jr.
Parents are invited to these free talks. Full details and booking information via the link below.
